Tell me about scanning, what exactly is it?

Scanning is the hobby of being able to listen in to two way radio communications of different sorts using radio receivers or scanners, with this equipment which is readily available you can tune into all sorts of exciting voice transmission at any time, providing of course they are operating and within range of your receiver or scanner.

Everyday there are heaps of people using radio transmitters to communicate with other people, both locally around you and all over the world! Most of the time you will be able to pick up local stations just fine using the standard antenna on your scanner, however if you want to pickup stations from a long way away then your going to need an outside antenna.

That sounds interesting, what could I hear?

You might be able to pick up and listen to such things as: An Ambulance rushing to the scene of an accident or transferring a patient to hospital, Fire fighters responding to a house fire or fighting a bush fire, Police officers going about their daily jobs, Taxi drivers commuting their passengers all over town, Security guards protecting important places or events, Train drivers reporting in their position or their destination, Local truck drivers hauling logs or heavy loads, Amateur radio operators (HAM'S) talking to friends locally or across the other side of the world, CB Radio operators chatting to one another, Ships and boats in your local water ways, Council or construction workers repairing various things, and Aircraft (both civil and Military) just to name a few, almost anyone who uses a radio transmitter could be picked up!

However there may be some people or services that might have sensitive or secret information that they don't want the general public to hear, in these situations they may "Digitally Encrypt" there radio communications to stop people listening in, there is no scanner or modification available that will allow you to listen in to these sorts of transmissions at all, period!
